The National Assembly has challenged journalists to be factual and truthful while reporting on issues relating to the National Assembly and parliament to avoid misinforming citizens.
Speaking at a two-day National Assembly workshop with the media in Lusaka, National Assembly Director – International Relations, Anthony Mpolokoso underscored the important role the media play in promoting good governance and democracy.
Mpolokoso said there’s need for the media to understand parliamentary procedures, rules, processes and jargon in order to improve the quality of media coverage.
“You are strategic partners as you work with the National Assembly in promoting good and upholding the culture of democracy,” he stated.
“In recent years there has been concerns regarding the polarisation of the media in the country.”
He condemned the stories written by non journalists on social media as they are the cause of confusion.
“We rely on journalists to give the factual and accurate information,” noted Mpolokoso.
He assured that the National Assembly was an open public institution at any given time.
The National Assembly in partnership with the BBC Media Action hosted a two day training media work shop aimed at acquainting journalists from different media houses with more knowledge about the National Assembly.
