The Zambian government is cracking down on illegal field burning as wildfires rage across drought-stricken areas of the country.

Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, expressed concern over the rise in human-caused wildfires, particularly in southern Zambia.

“The exceptionally dry conditions due to low rainfall have created ideal conditions for wildfires,” Minister Nzovu said.

He emphasized the illegality of reckless field burning, citing Section 330 of the Penal Code which prescribes a maximum sentence of fourteen years imprisonment for the offense.

Nzovu urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the authorities in order to curb the spread of wildfires.

The government’s warning comes amidst ongoing drought conditions that have gripped the country affecting over 6 million farmers.

President Hakainde Hichilema also previously called on citizens to avoid practices that could worsen the drought.
