FORMER Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya has urged Zambians to set aside partisan politics and embrace unity, grace, and decorum in honouring the life and legacy of the late former president Edgar Lungu.
Dr Chilufya emphasised the importance of focusing on principles of respect and peace as the nation reflects on Lungu’s contributions.
Speaking on Lusaka Radio’s “Talk of the City” programme, Dr. Chilufya highlighted Lungu’s significant impact on Zambia’s health sector during his presidency.
He specifically cited the establishment of key institutions such as the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA), Levy Mwanawasa Medical University, and the Zambia National Public Health Institute, all aimed at enhancing healthcare access and quality.
Dr Chilufya also noted that Lungu’s government oversaw the construction of specialist hospitals, increased recruitment of healthcare professionals, and made substantial investments in medical equipment to transform the healthcare system.
“The initiatives undertaken during president Lungu’s tenure have had a profound effect on our country’s healthcare landscape,” Dr Chilufya stated.
He further underscored Lungu’s direct involvement in addressing public health crises, including cholera and COVID-19, as evidence of his commitment to the well-being of Zambian citizens.
The former minister added that given the magnitude of Lungu’s achievements in improving the healthcare system, it is only fitting that he be honoured with a State funeral.
“Such an event is not only a moral imperative, but it is also enshrined in our Constitution. It will demonstrate our profound gratitude for his service and his legacy,” he said.
The former minister implored Zambians of all backgrounds to unite and honour Lungu’s memory.
“It is not a time to dwell on mistakes that may have been made during his tenure rather, it is a time to pay tribute to his efforts to improve our healthcare system and to build a better Zambia for us all,” stated Dr Chilufya.
