PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has underscored the importance of enhanced research and disease control measures in ensuring a safe environment for the export of animal products.

He urged veterinarians to take proactive steps to monitor and control animal diseases.

Addressing the Veterinary Association of Zambia’s annual general meeting yesterday, President Hichilema emphasised the need for proactive measures to safeguard the livestock sector’s economic benefits.

“I challenge our professionals in this sector to heighten surveillance and enhance disease control and research, so we can become net exporters of animal products,” President Hichilema stated.

Highlighting the economic potential of the livestock subsector, President Hichilema hinted the government’s plan of growing cattle numbers, leveraging it for exports.

“We want to grow the sector to 6.5 million cattle.” he said “From beef exports, we can earn US$1 billion as a country each year.”

The president called for joint efforts to address the growing challenges posed by drought and livestock diseases.

“We need to be proactive in addressing livestock diseases if we are to take advantage of the huge economic benefits from this subsector,” he added.

President Hichilema reassured government support for the livestock sector, including the construction and rehabilitation of livestock infrastructure and the recruitment of veterinarian personnel.

“We need to work together to overcome the challenges facing the livestock sector. On our part as government, we shall prioritise the construction and rehabilitation of livestock supporting infrastructure,” President Hichilema affirmed.

The president’s call for enhanced research and disease control measures comes amid efforts to bolster Zambia’s position as a key player in the global animal products export market.
