Single mother becomes wheelbarrow pusher to feed family

4

THROUGH the chaos and busy human congestion at City market with never ending voices of traders trying to entice the next busy customer passing by, a single mother in Kanyama moves with ease with just a Pssss! to make sure clear her way as she transports goods on a wheelbarrow.

Known as a female Zamcab, Hellen Manda, a 28 year old woman of Kanyama Compound earns a living through transporting people’s load of goods on a wheelbarrow at Lusaka’s City Market and Soweto to feed her family and she is not shy about it.

Manda said she makes about K100 on a daily basis and when there is good business she goes up to K150.

“I hustle for a living, and am not shy with what I do. I pay rentals, I buy food and my child is in school. In short that’s what puts food on my table,” Manda told #Kalemba.

“I am single mother, and I carry wheelbarrows for people, a lot of people give me business to carry goods for them and give me something which I use on my daily needs.”

Manda said in an interview that she works hard to feed her family as a single mother and encouraged women to work hard and do anything tangible that they can help them earn a living.

“I would like to encourage my fellow women and youths to work extra hard [for legit money], don’t feel shy to do what puts food on your table. Do not be selective, have strength and work,” she said.

Manda shared that she does not mind what other people say or how other people look at her as she navigates through her work to feed her family.

Meanwhile, she said the daily routine of her work hasn’t been a smooth journey because she has to move very fast in a chaotic crowd to make more trips.

And the labour that has become part of her life is not something she can do for the rest of her life hence she appealed to well-wishers who can help her with enough capital to venture into other businesses.

Let Chile One play with my boobs in peace, I love it like that, Tianna tells critics

0

“No, it’s not disrespectful for my man to slap my breasts. I love it here, ifwe that’s how we play,” Tianna fired back at critics who accused Chile One of publicly humiliating her by playfully slapping her boobs.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Kse5Y8rus/?mibextid=oFDknk

Early this week, Chile One’s hands-on approach to love stirred up social media after a video of him playfully slapping his fiancée Tianna’s breasts went viral.

While the couple appeared to enjoy their lighthearted moment, online moral police officers and traditional marriage counselors emerged and declared the act disrespectful.

Social media was divided, with some users praising the couple’s carefree love while others felt the singer had crossed a line.

Among those who disapproved was social commentator and vlogger Simon Mwewa, who expressed his concerns in a Facebook post.

“Chile One slapping Tianna’s mammaries (breasts)on social media is the highest form of disrespect to a woman that you are dating. I don’t think he will marry that girl. He’s just playing with her the way he’s playing with her breasts on social media. Guys, not everything is for public consumption. So when that girl’s family sees that video, will they be happy?” he wrote.

Mwewa’s remarks struck a nerve but instead of playing the victim, Tianna doubled down and said she enjoys it like that.

“Oh my, Mr Mwewa, I appreciate your concern, but let me make it clear here. I am not complaining. This is my fiancé and soon to be husband. I am comfortable with him as he is comfortable with me. Sometimes what we don’t think about is that this is how some couples play. Many people here would really want to do this, but they can’t because they live by rules created by someone else. This is only disrespectful to those who live by that rule, not to me,” she responded.

And just to be crystal clear, Tianna also wrote on her Facebook page, probably another way to respond to her critics and wrote.

“I love it here. Ifwe that’s how we play. That disrespect you are talking about only applies to people who live by that rule. Who am I going to allow to play with me if not my man?”

We will put CCTV in universities to monitor sugar daddies – Hichilema

12

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has directed Technology and Science minister Felix Mutati to install CCTV cameras in higher learning institutions in order to monitor sugar daddies and mummies who go there to disturb students.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15bq5oojDi/?mibextid=oFDknk

Officiating at the National Youth Indaba in Lusaka yesterday, President Hichilema encouraged students to focus on school and put aside worldly things.

“I also have a message for sugar daddies, stop going to those places. You sugar daddies and sugar mummies, ba monk when you see sugar daddies at the monk square, tell them to go out of that place.”

“I have issued instructions to the minster of Technology to put CCTV cameras there so we can see who is disturbing our students, you sugar daddies and mummies, leave my students alone,” stated President Hichilema.

The Head of State further urged students to stay away from drugs and focus on seizing opportunities that government is providing for them.

“Many people make unnecessary mistakes when they are young and they regret those mistakes. We want you to do the right things. Seize the opportunities. If someone comes to your room and sells you a drug, report them to the police, you guys who want to sell drugs to my youths, my students, I’m coming for you,” the President warned.

President Hichilema also took time to encourage the youths to consider applying for the recently launched voluntary national service programme where he promised to sponsor more than 300 individuals.

“A lot was done to bring me down I just used to say mwachepasana ah mwachepasana. You will feel better than you feel today when you graduate from there. So we want you young people to have that opportunity too,” he narrated.

He called upon the private sector to also help in sponsoring individuals to the device so as to prepare more youths for discipline and resilience.

GUEST ARTICLE: Prove equal contribution to have 50/50 property share after divorce

1

By Dickson Jere

A driver and nurse were married but divorced after six years. They had one child. They lived together in one of the properties in Salama Park which belonged to the man. The plot had two houses – one on which was built during the subsistence of the marriage. The man also had three vehicles.

The two failed to resolve the sharing of the properties after divorce and the matter went to the High Court and later reached the Supreme Court. It was a highly contested case!

The man argued that he had built the house on the plot belonging to his late father and therefore the property was not his. He claimed the vehicles were not in his name.

A panel of three Supreme Court Judges heard the appeal and stated that sharing of family property after divorce is not based on the fifty-fifty formula but rather what one contributed to that property.

“Although indeed parties to a marriage are recognized as equal, equality and fairness implies that when their love life is over, the parties to a marriage should each walk out with a share of what they contributed,” the Judges said.

“A marriage is not, and, should never be regarded as the reason for equal sharing of matrimonial property,” the Supreme Court ruled.

The Judges said the contribution can be materially, financially or in kind whereby the spouse helps in supervising the work of the construction or indeed buys food at home to relieve the pressure on one who is building.

“Our view is that property settlement should be undertaken on the basis of fairness and conscience; not on an unjustified reference to the 50:50 dogma,” the Court said.

It also observed that nowadays days most women were breadwinners unlike in the past and therefore what they acquire during marriage should be protected too. In fact, in this case, the wife – nurse – earned more than the husband driver.

“Resort to the 50:50 philosophy in sharing such property would clearly be a naked affront to the justice of the situation in those circumstances,” the Court said.

“Our understanding is that it is possible for parties to a marriage to acquire property during the subsistence of a marriage that is not intended to be for the family as a whole,” they said.

Examples of acquiring shares in companies or bonds by spouse may not be for the family benefit but that particular person and therefore such property was not available for sharing.

The Court ordered for the equal sharing of the house and the vehicles in dispute because the wife contributed and the man never challenged her claims. The court also ordered the man to make monthly contributions to the child.

The court said property settlement is always an emotive issue as it invoke bitterness between the parties who once loved each other.
“It is thus always an ominous exercise for the Court to undertake,” the Judges bemoaned.

Court citation – Nkhata v Nkhata- Appeal No. 60 of 2015.

This is an important case that has changed Zambia’s jurisprudence on property settlement after divorce. The old notion that wife and husband share property 50/50 after divorce has been discarded by the Supreme Court. You have to show what you contributed to those properties.

Zesco transformer braiis Mumbwa youth

0

A 30 year old man of Central Province’s Mumbwa dustrict has been barbecued to near perfection after mistaking the long hours of load shedding for a free pass to acquire illegal riches by attempting to steal Zesco cables from a transformer at Mabele Primary School in Mumbwa.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/161ciqAvfi/?mibextid=oFDknk

Winston Ndiya of Menengo village of Chief Mumba must have thought the gods of electricity had taken a nap when he found the transformer sitting quietly, not humming, just like the thousands of Zambians sitting in darkness, waiting for power to return.

Convinced he had outsmarted the system, the braiied human meat pulled out his screwdriver, pliers and misplaced confidence and got to work.

Unfortunately for him, Zesco transformers do not forgive nor forget.

Just as he was about to claim his loot, a bolt of electricity pounced on him like a hungry lion and roasted him in seconds.

Central Province’s police commissioner Charity Munganga said at around 02:00 hours, Mabele Primary School senior teacher Justin Simupande who had been peacefully snoring through yet another salary increase, was rudely awakened by a loud bang outside his house.

Simupande stepped out to investigate and found a badly seasoned Winston squatting near the transformer with his face looking like a failed piece of charcoal baked sweet potato.

At first, Simupande assumed the man was just a drunk who had picked a fight with the ground and lost.

But at sunrise, when the senior teacher realised this was something far worse.

“As he drew closer, he noticed the man’s face was burnt and his clothes were dusty. Initially, he thought the person was a drunkard and left him there.”

“At around 04:00 hours…Simupande alerted his family, who went to check on the person and discovered the extent of his injuries,”
disclosed Munganga.

Zesco security and police officers arrived at the crime scene to find evidence of Ndiya’s unfinished mission and found a neatly folded earth wire, a screwdriver and pliers all sitting next to a man who now looked like a piece of poorly seasoned pork left on a lit brazier.

He was rushed to Mumbwa District Hospital where doctors are currently scraping off the extra crispy parts and trying to restore him to his original shade.

Meanwhile, police officers are also patiently waiting at his bedside, cuffs in hand, ready to make sure his next destination is a jail cell and not another transformer.

Youths have agreed to amend constitution – Hichilema

0

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says youths have agreed to amend the constitution in order to allow more women, youths and the differently abled to participate in key leadership roles.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BKKWg8NGt/?mibextid=oFDknk

Officiating at this year’s Youth Day celebrations in Mongu yesterday, President Hichilema said youths are the real owners of the country because they are the majority and so no one can dispute what the they say.

“We know the youth are the majority, I’m asking you that your government under the constitutional obligations need to amend the constitution so that we can have more women and youths in parliament, even those that live with disabilities, to do that we need to amend the constitution.”

“Do you agree that we amend the constitution. The owners of the country, the youth have agreed to amend the constitution. Your voices matter, when you say things, we hear and we work on them,” stated the Head of State.

He further discouraged youths from engaging in staged protests against the constitution stating that if they did so then they would be protesting against their own interest.

“Here is my request to you. Keep the peace in this country. Don’t be enticed by someone telling you let’s go in the streets to demonstrate… about the constitution. What is wrong with the constitution amendment to bring more women and youth in parliament? So you will be demonstrating against your own interest,” said President Hichilema.

“Nobody has seen what is contained in the draft constitution. But people want to go in the steeets to use who, to use you, are you going to go in the streets to beat who, to beat your fellow youth to damage property, aikona man, aikona.”

I raised money for equipment through part time jobs, award, family – left out volunteer

1

WHEN Kapungwe Mwansa’s story on how he turned his disappointment of being left out of the health workers’ recruitment into a thriving diagnostic centre made headlines on Monday, many netizens were inspired and delighted but some questioned his genuine source of income.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1DFebkdPJ7/?mibextid=oFDknk

“How did he fund such a venture? Was volunteering enough to raise capital? How did he find the money for such expensive equipment?” Those were some of the lingering questions that some of our readers had.

And now Mwansa has set the record straight for those who may need more information or clarity.

The 28 year old radiography technologist did not just wake up one day and find himself running Mwapola Diagnostic Centre in Linda Compound with the equipment.

He shared in an interview with #kalemba that the process was a slow, painful grind, filled with sacrifices that most people wouldn’t notice at first glance.

Mwansa explained that his capital did not come from volunteering alone but was also raised through part time jobs, an award he won and support from family.

Even with that, he did not purchase all his equipment at once but secured some items on payment plans.

“And one thing is, all these items, some are on feasible payment plans,” he stated.

To cut costs, Mwansa opted to stay in a three bedroom house with six others where they all shared rental expenses among themselves instead of seeking costly accommodation.

He believes that people often assume success comes from one big break, but for him, it was about making smart financial decisions by saving where he could, stretching every coin and focusing on long term goals even when others thought he wasn’t generous.

Mwansa shared that volunteering gave him the necessary experience, mentorship and exposure to start earning.

“As a volunteer, I gained the necessary skills under the supervision and mentorship of a senior Radiographer, then I started getting work, moving from one facility to the other, I was not homeless but I had no time to go home rather carry clothes in my bag and those close to me could testify,” said Mwansa.

The inspirational youth believes young people must recognise their value early, raise their standards and never settle for less.

He stated the importance of continuous learning, something he has personally embodied.

“Even after graduating from Evelyn Hone College in 2022, I remain closely connected to the institution, frequently returning to learn from lecturers and the imaging skills lab,” he shared.

He noted that many experienced professionals in his field confidently turn down job offers that seem good on the surface but do not match their worth, simply because they understand their value.

Mwapola Diagnostic Centre, which provides ultrasound and lab services has already created employment for two young people but Mwansa’s vision goes far beyond Linda Compound.

His goal is to expand the business to all ten provinces.

While he has managed to get this far through personal effort, he acknowledged that scaling up requires external support.

He hopes government and other stakeholders can recognise the impact of his work and offer the necessary backing.

Beyond healthcare, Mwansa is also an author. His book, Unveiling the Shrouded Eye of Modern Medicine in the Zambian Health Sector, won the 2024 Coppa Book Award and has been well received in the market.

Pope Francis no longer in immediate danger of death – Vatican

1

DOCTORS have confirmed that Pope Francis is no longer in imminent danger following his battle with double pneumonia, marking the most positive update on his condition since he was hospitalised nearly a month ago.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16NPkA8HNn/?mibextid=oFDknk

The 88 year old pontiff who has been receiving treatment at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, remains under medical supervision.

While his condition has stabilised and he has shown signs of improvement, doctors have opted to keep him in the hospital for several more days to continue treatment and ensure a smooth recovery.

The Vatican stated that recent blood tests indicate progress and Pope Francis has responded well to the prescribed treatment.

However, due to his chronic lung condition, he continues to use supplemental oxygen during the day and a ventilation mask at night to aid his breathing.

Yesterday, Vatican officials reported that the Pope woke up around 08:00 hours after a peaceful night’s rest.

This is a notable change from his usual 04:30 hours wake up time at the Vatican, suggesting that he is allowing himself additional rest as he recuperates.

On Monday evening, doctors lifted their previously “guarded” prognosis, meaning the pope was no longer at immediate risk from the respiratory infection he was admitted with on February 14.

However, they remain cautious due to his age and the potential for complications.

“Given the complexity of his condition and the severity of the infection at the time of admission, medical therapy will need to continue in a hospital setting for several more days,” a Vatican statement read.

Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis has continued to follow Vatican affairs from his hospital room.

On Monday, he participated remotely in the Vatican’s weeklong spiritual retreat, attending both morning and afternoon sessions via videoconference.
