THROUGH the chaos and busy human congestion at City market with never ending voices of traders trying to entice the next busy customer passing by, a single mother in Kanyama moves with ease with just a Pssss! to make sure clear her way as she transports goods on a wheelbarrow.
Known as a female Zamcab, Hellen Manda, a 28 year old woman of Kanyama Compound earns a living through transporting people’s load of goods on a wheelbarrow at Lusaka’s City Market and Soweto to feed her family and she is not shy about it.
Manda said she makes about K100 on a daily basis and when there is good business she goes up to K150.
“I hustle for a living, and am not shy with what I do. I pay rentals, I buy food and my child is in school. In short that’s what puts food on my table,” Manda told #Kalemba.
“I am single mother, and I carry wheelbarrows for people, a lot of people give me business to carry goods for them and give me something which I use on my daily needs.”
Manda said in an interview that she works hard to feed her family as a single mother and encouraged women to work hard and do anything tangible that they can help them earn a living.
“I would like to encourage my fellow women and youths to work extra hard [for legit money], don’t feel shy to do what puts food on your table. Do not be selective, have strength and work,” she said.
Manda shared that she does not mind what other people say or how other people look at her as she navigates through her work to feed her family.
Meanwhile, she said the daily routine of her work hasn’t been a smooth journey because she has to move very fast in a chaotic crowd to make more trips.
And the labour that has become part of her life is not something she can do for the rest of her life hence she appealed to well-wishers who can help her with enough capital to venture into other businesses.
