POLICE in Lusaka are investigating a case of child desertion after a newly born baby girl was found abandoned and unclothed along a road in Kanyama Compound early this morning.

The baby, estimated to be only a few hours old was discovered around 07:00 hours by a passerby identified as 50 year old Ivy Mufwempa of Kanyama West as she made her way to a nearby shop.

According to a report filed at Kanyama West Police Post, Mufwempa was walking through the premises of the old Zambeef building located along Mumbwa Road when she noticed the baby lying on the ground.

Upon closer inspection, she found the infant alive, responsive but completely naked and without any form of protection from the morning cold.

Mufwempa picked up the child and took her to the police post where she was advised to take the baby to Kanyama Level One Hospital.

Medical staff at the facility have confirmed that the baby is receiving care and is in stable condition.

Police officers visited the scene and have since opened an inquiry file into the matter.

Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the individual responsible for abandoning the child.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the incident in a statement describing the act as inhumane and criminal.

He urged members of the public who may have information to assist in the ongoing investigations.

“Child desertion is a serious offence and the Zambia Police Service is committed to ensuring that those involved are brought to justice,” Hamoonga stated.

The baby remains under medical observation while social welfare authorities are expected to take over her care as investigations continue.
