Truck driver’s excessive speed claims 2 lives, Injures 5 at Luangwa Bridge Market

TWO people are dead and five others seriously injured after a 28 year old Sino truck driver of Lusaka’s Garden Compound, lost control of his vehicle due to excessive speed, plowing into market tables and pedestrians at Luangwa Bridge Market yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 16:30 hours on June 13, 2025, along the Great East Road, near the Luangwa Traffic Police.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the accident, stating that the driver Alinot Mutangama’s truck, bearing registration numbers AIC 8354 and trailer BAD 5610T, property of Shaain Carriers, first struck market tables before colliding with a stationary Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Toyota Hilux (CAA 4103) and then overturning.

The deceased have been identified as 19-year-old Violet Mwanza and 17-year-old Margaret Mwanza, both from Nyangu Village, Chief Mpanshya, who died on the spot.

Their bodies have been deposited in the Katondwe Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.

Among the injured is Evelyn Mwale, whose age is unknown, who sustained a fractured left leg and a deep cut on her right leg.

Others who suffered slight injuries include Regina Mwanza, 21, a 17-year-old juvenile, Elizabeth Njovu, 20, and Daniel Nyangu, 55 of Meanwood, Lusaka.

All five injured individuals are currently admitted at Katondwe Mission Hospital in Luangwa Feira.

The stationary ZRA Toyota Hilux, extensively damaged in the collision, was being driven by 59-year-old Kelvin Bupe of Meanwood, Chongwe, who complained of pain in his right arm.

Mutangama, the driver of the Sino truck, did not sustain any injuries. A passenger in his truck, 38-year-old Ruth Daka of Chipembi Village, Nyimba District, sustained slight injuries, while her 4-year-old daughter was unhurt.
