Copperbelt Police Commissioner Pathius Siadenge confirmed the incident to Kalemba, stating that Matebele, who resided in Mansion Hostels Room 9B, had visited a friend, Manifold Samboko, in Room 10 on the evening of June 11, 2025.

According to police, Matebele and Samboko chatted until around 22:00 hours.

During this time, Matebele reportedly made a phone call to his father discussing previous problems of being visited by witches at night whilst asleep.

The two friends parted ways, and Matebele was found lifeless the following morning, around 6:00 hours.

Police who visited the scene reported no visible injuries on the body, which was found hanging by a computer charging cable.

Matebele’s body was later transported to Kitwe Teaching Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, Mukuba University Biomedical Sciences Student Association president Peter Zimba called rededication to mental health to avoid such incidents

“Derick Matebele will be remembered as a dedicated member of the Association and a Co-founder,” Zimba stated.

“He served as the chairperson, at a voluntary note, of the Electoral Committee of our Association during the 2024 elections to usher into office the first executive committee of the Mukuba University Biomedical Sciences Student Association (MUK-BIOMEDSSA).”
