SPEAKER of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti has directed Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali to give a ministerial statement on why transporters haven’t reduced transport fares for passengers despite fuel pump prices going down.

On Monday, the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) decreased fuel pump prices with petrol being reduced from K31.36 to K28.00 and diesel from K25.12 to K23.13 per litre.
The Kwacha has also appreciated against the US dollar and currently trading between K22 to K23.
Yesterday, Nyimba Member of Parliament Menyani Zulu wondered why transporters had not reduced fares for passengers even when the diesel price had been reduced.
Zulu charged that it was shocking to see and hear transporters rush to increasing the transport costs whenever pump prices are increased but never haste to do any reduction when prices are down.
“Fuel has been going down and the prices have not corresponded in going down also. When fuel increases, they increase the transport fare. For the last few months, the fuel has been decreasing.”
“Now that the Kwacha has appreciated and the price of fuel has gone down, what is government doing to reduce the transport fare. Why isn’t government talking to transporters to reduce the fare?” Wondered Zulu.
And in response, Mutti ordered Tayali to issue a ministerial statement on Thursday this week to explain why Zambians still had to endure high prices of transport fare when the nation was slowly stabilising.
