Ndola man’s regret for asaulting wife kicks in too late, court slaps him with jail

A NDOLA man has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for unlawfully wounding his wife with a machete.

Maybin Kakoma was handed the sentence by Ndola Magistrate Mary Goma after the incident on May 27, 2025, where he attacked his wife, Esther Chali.

The court heard that on the day of the assault, Esther Chali was harvesting maize near the Kafubu River when Kakoma informed her he was going drinking.

He returned home around 22:30 hours, heavily intoxicated, and began verbally abusing his wife.

When Chali attempted to flee, Kakoma pursued her, catching up and repeatedly kicking her.

He then armed himself with a machete and struck her left arm, causing a deep cut and significant bleeding.

Chali also sustained several bruises to her face.

In his mitigation, Kakoma expressed remorse for his actions, pledging to abstain from future violence.

He pleaded for leniency, citing the potential suffering of his children, especially for the youngest who is 12, if he were incarcerated.

Kakoma also asked for the courts lenience so that he would reconcile with his dear wife.

However, like Chester’s song, “Wakamba Late” Magistrate Goma said the defendant should have considered his family before picking a machete to inflict pain on his wife.

She stated that she considered his mitigation and sentenced him to two years in jail.
