Zambians and Zimbabweans are one – Hichilema

WHILE some keyboard champions enjoy pitting Zambia against Zimbabwe like rivals in a political boxing ring, President Hakainde Hichilema has come out saying the two countries are not enemies, but one people cut from the same cloth.

Speaking when he met with Zimbabwe’s Vice President and special envoy, General Constantino Chiwenga, at State House in Lusaka yesterday, President Hichilema said the unity between the peoples of the two nations dates back to pre-colonial times and goes beyond politics and borders.

The Head of State explained that many Zambians of Zimbabwean origin have settled in towns such as Mumbwa, Monze, and Namwala, and are now full citizens contributing to national development.

“The relationship between Zambia and Zimbabwe is umbilical. Our people have always been together. If you look at our history, the trading routes in prehistoric times show that this was just one territory. People moved freely, and those cultural and family ties still exist today,” President Hichilema said.

He further reflected on Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, recalling how former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe once lived and taught in Zambia, showing how the two countries supported each other during pivotal moments in their histories.

The President also cited various joint economic projects as evidence of collaboration, including the Kariba Dam, Kariba North and South Banks, and the Batoka Gorge Hydroelectric Scheme saying that even infrastructure are part of the legacy of partnership.

“We own a hotel in Victoria Falls. These are not just historical facts, they are reminders that we are meant to work together for the benefit of our people. Our relationship should be understood and valued by the youth. They must grow it, not polarize it,” he added.

Zimbabwean Vice President General Chiwenga (rtd), was in Zambia to convey a special message from Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa following the passing of Zambia’s sixth Republican President, Edgar Lungu.
