48 year old Mateyo Banda of Pekete Village in Chief Pembamoyo’s area, was discovered dead near the doorway of his grass thatched house at Koka Farm, not far from Adyodyo Primary School.
His alleged killer is 25 year old Michael Gift, a Malawian national from Kapita Village in Chief Mlonyeni’s area, Mchinji District.
The suspect was found at the scene, standing near the mutilated body and has since been arrested by police.
The killing is believed to have happened between 14:00 and 18:00 hours on Wednesday, July 3, 2025.
Eastern Province police commissioner Robertson Mweemba said Gift crossed into Zambia two days earlier under suspicious circumstances and was seen wandering around the area, behaving in a strange and hostile manner.
According to eyewitnesses, villagers became concerned on the morning of July 4, when two men heading to their fields noticed the deceased’s damaged house and saw the suspect lurking nearby.
They alerted Mateyo’s elder brother, Divason Banda, who rushed to the farm with other locals.
What they found was a scene of horror.
Mateyo’s head had been completely chopped off and dumped near a fireplace with the skull crushed open, exposing the brain.
His chest and abdomen had been slit open, his back had deep cuts, both fists were chopped off at the waist and his legs were cut from the ankles, with his feet still inside his shoes.
Police officers were immediately called to the scene where they found an axe and a knife, believed to have been used in the attack.
Mweemba confirmed the suspect is in custody and investigations are underway.
He added that the police are also liaising with their Malawian counterparts to establish whether the suspect has a history of mental illness.
The body of the deceased has been taken to Chipata Central Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
“More details to follow after thorough investigations with our Counterparts in Malawi to ascertain whether the accused is known to be insane,” said Mweemba.
