Government cancels Defence Force Day celebrations to honour Lungu

THE Ministry of Defence has cancelled all celebratory activities scheduled for this year’s Defence Force Day in honour of late former president Edgar Lungu.

In a media address to the nation ahead of the 49th anniversary of the Zambia National Defence Force, Ministry of Defence Ambrose Lufuma said that while the day remains a significant milestone in the country’s military history, it falls during a period of national mourning following Lungu’s recent passing.

“As such, commemorative activities will not take place. Let us mourn him in dignity and peace, and honour his contribution to the development of our nation,” stated Lufuma.

Defence Force Day is marked every year on June 13 to commemorate the unification of the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force (ZAF) and Zambia National Service (ZNS) into one cohesive structure.

The Zambia National Defence Force was formed by the country’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda in 1976.

Major General Kingsley Chinkuli became the first indigenous Zambian to command the unified Defence Force.

Lufuma reaffirmed the Defence Force’s commitment to peace, unity and national development.

“This year’s theme, “Promoting Peace, Unity and Health through Sports among Defence Force Personnel,” underscores the role of physical wellness in strengthening military effectiveness.”

“Sports significantly contribute to physical and mental fitness, teamwork, discipline and morale. These values are essential for military success,” said the minister.

Lufuma also noted the Defence Force’s key contributions beyond combat readiness, including its support during natural disasters, infrastructure development and participation in international peacekeeping missions in countries such as Sudan, Angola, Rwanda, and the Central African Republic.

He further urged the Defence Force to remain loyal, professional and non partisan while continuing to play an active role in Zambia’s socio economic development.

“As we mark this important day, I call on the Defence Force to pay tribute to the founding commanders whose values continue to guide the institution. The government remains committed to supporting the Defence Force in various ways,” said Lufuma.
