Lungu’s family should put aside politics, cooperate with government – NDC

THE National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has urged late former president Edgar Lungu’s family to put political differences aside and focus on giving Lungu a dignified send off done by the State.

NDC spokesperson Emmanuel Malite said the family needed to understand that denying Lungu a state funeral or burying his remains at a private place won’t erase the his legacy or the security provided during his tenure.

Malite added that the state is mandated to continue to provide security for the former president’s family, regardless of the burial arrangements.

“The Lungu family, including Tasila, Madam Esther Lungu, and Daliso Lungu, should prioritize a dignified sendoff for the sixth Republican President, Edgar Lungu. As the nation mourns, it’s essential to put aside political differences and ensure a respectful farewell,” he said.

He also said the circumstances surrounding Lungu’s death have raised several questions, given the allegations and the involvement of identifiable persons of interest such as PF faction secretary general Raphael Nakachinda.

He said the former President’s death required a thorough investigation.

“Mr. Nakacinda’s role in the events leading up to the President’s death makes him a key witness, and his testimony could shed light on the circumstances,” stated Malite.

He added that Emmanuel Mwamba’s claims about state agents attempting to abduct Lungu’s body have also sparked controversy.

“These allegations, combined with Mr. Mwamba’s past controversies, including his connection to the death of former President Fredrick Chiluba, warrant scrutiny.”

“In light of this, it’s reasonable to revisit the demands for a postmortem on former President Chiluba’s death. The Lungu family should consider the nation’s sentiments and allow a state funeral to take place, ensuring a fitting tribute to the late President’s service to the nation,” he charged.
