Double tragedy strikes Lusaka family, mother dies attending son’s funeral

A LUSAKA family has been plunged into deeper grief a mother, who traveled to Mwinilunga to bury her son who had drowned, collapsed and died before his burial could take place.

Frailness Siamusumpuka, was in Mwinilunga to attend the funeral of her biological son, Sedies Simatonge.

Sedies, a form one student at Kabanda Day Secondary School, had tragically drowned in the Mudanyama River on Saturday, June 14, 2025, while swimming with friends.

His body was recovered the following morning, Sunday.

The community had gathered, and preparations were underway for Sedies’ burial on Tuesday afternoon.

“However, the ceremony was halted when Siamusumpuka, upon arriving and seeing her son’s body, suddenly collapsed, ” stated Kenneth Kakoma, a representative from Kabanda Day Secondary School.

“She was rushed to the hospital but sadly passed away.”

The family has now arranged for both Sedies and his mother, Frailness, to be transported back to Lusaka for burial.

The family is appealing for public assistance to cover the costs of transporting the two bodies.
