11 Miles accident kills 5 after minibus rolls backwards

FIVE people have died following a road accident that occurred yesterday morning along the Great North Road at 11 Miles in the Savanna Hill area of Lusaka.

According to police reports, the accident happened around 06:00 hours.

Involved was a Toyota Hiace minibus bearing registration number BCG 9740, driven by Kennedy Pungwa, aged 48, of Chazanga Compound, Lusaka.

The minibus was carrying 16 passengers and was heading towards the Lusaka Central Business District.

Police said the accident happened when the vehicle was ascending a hill but suddenly rolled backwards before overturning.

Following the incident, three passengers lost their lives on the spot while ten others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

Later in the day, two more passengers succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment, bringing the death toll to five.

The deceased have been identified as Chitonga Kelon, aged 42, of 12 Miles in Chibombo District, Mambwe Priscilla, aged 31, of 12 Miles, Tryfford Malipilo, aged 26, of Chiyuni area, James Simpande, aged 38, of Chiyuni area and Victor Nsamba, aged 49, also of Chiyuni area.

Meanwhile, three passengers escaped without injuries while the driver sustained slight injuries and is receiving treatment at Chipata Level One Hospital.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the accident and said investigations had been instituted to determine the exact cause, including the possible mechanical condition of the vehicle.

“The Zambia Police Service wishes to convey its sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” said Chilabi.

Police have since urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to exercise caution when driving on hilly roads.
