Nakacinda warns against power grabs as PF plunges into succession battle

THE death of the country’s former president Edgar Lungu who was also PF leader has immediately triggered a power struggle within the opposition party, with Secretary General Raphael Nakacinda revealing that some members are already attempting to position themselves for the party presidency.

These revelations came to light as Nakacinda addressed PF faction party members at their headquarters yesterday during a rally in Lusaka.

Nakacinda’s remarks strongly suggested internal ‘Mingalato’ for power within the PF in the wake of Lungu’s passing, despite his attempts to project an image of unity.

“We must put the interests of the Zambian people first and foremost, and not allow our personal ambitions to cloud our judgment or distract us from our mission,” Nakacinda declared.

He urged those harbouring aspirations to lead PF amidst Lungu’s demise to remember that humility is the cornerstone of true leadership.

“God will anoint a leader from within the Patriotic Front to take up from Lungu and lead the nation to prosperity in 2026,” Nakacinda’ emphasised.

“We are confident that the leader God chooses will be from within our own party. However, there is no need to engage in competition or infighting over this matter. Our focus must remain on unity and preparation for the upcoming election in 2026.”

In the midst of the nation’s collective mourning of President Lungu, Nakacinda underscored the party’s dedication to ensuring a peaceful and harmonious tribute despite political differences.

He also called for a peaceful mourning period for the former president, cautioning against provocation or threats of arrests.

Despite acknowledging these internal pressures, Nakacinda attempted to project a unified front with other opposition parties.

He expressed faith in the unity of opposition parties, assuring the public that the PF and the Tonse alliance, as well as other opposition groups, will maintain a unified front in the lead-up to the 2026 general election.

Meanwhile, Nakacinda denied rumors of a divide within the opposition, a claim that now appears to be undermined by his own revelations about internal PF power struggles.

“President Lungu was a leader for all Zambians, regardless of their political affiliations, this time of national mourning, we must remember that his legacy transcends politics,” added Nakacinda.
