Speaking after a swearing in ceremony at State House today, President Hichilema clarified that the power plant was birthed by the UPND administration, about 10 months ago.

“And I was scanning through social media and one posting says, ‘no! this was a PF project.’ I said what does this mean. This is a project for the people of Zambia brought on board by this government, through vision,” he shared.

President Hichilema said the project came about as a way of combatting the energy crisis that the country is currently facing.

The Head of State highlighted that government had so far done a lot in stabilising the economy and shared that only a few things remain to be worked on which, required a lot of time and effort.

He added that the recent appreciation of the Kwacha against the US dollar and fuel price reduction were a result of the energy reforms that have been put forward by his administration.

“The Kwacha stabilising is not magic, it’s a lot of work, reforms. That’s why you saw that 100 megawatts commission on Monday. [Fuel] pump prices are going down, it’s because of the energy reforms we have made,” he said.

He told the new public officers that they were lucky that they had been appointed at a time when government had done the most in stabilising the economy.

Meanwhile, the President also announced that government was pushing for lower interest rates by engaging banks in the country.
