Speaking during a media engagement yesterday, Mweetwa appealed to citizens to resist divisive rhetoric and instead focus on shared values and grief to honour Lungu’s memory.
He emphasised the importance of national solidarity to support the grieving Lungu family, stating that collective comfort and aid would help them navigate this difficult time.
“We are a people of great strength and spirit, and it is this strength and spirit that will help us overcome this difficult time,” Mweetwa stated.
He added that unity would not only assist the bereaved family but also foster harmony among Zambians.
Mweetwa also stressed the crucial role of responsible leadership during this period, calling on fellow leaders to prioritise the well-being of citizens in accordance with Zambia’s established values and principles.
He reiterated that as a Christian nation, upholding shared values and providing guidance is paramount.
However, Mweetwa reserved strong criticism for certain PF leaders, denouncing their reprehensible and dishonorable attempts to politicise the former president’s death.
He described their exploitation of this somber moment for political point-scoring as deeply unfortunate.
“The funeral of the former President should be a time for reflection and healing, not a platform for political mudslinging,” Mweetwa asserted.
He implored Zambians to reject divisive rhetoric and uphold peace, love, and understanding.
“Let us turn away from the hateful discourse being peddled by some and instead, uphold peace, love, and understanding. This is a time for mourning and introspection, not division. Let us honour the memory of the former President by living up to the ideals he embodied, and by working together to build a stronger, more united Zambia,” stated Mweetwa.
