Makumbi Nyirenda, went to sleep the previous night in his dormitory, but did not wake up.

The incident occurred between Monday at 21:00 hours and yesterday at around 06:00 hours.

According to reports, the deceased, who had a vibrant spirit and a passion for school activities was observed to be in seemingly good health and jovial on the fateful evening he retired to bed with no indication of any underlying health problems.

Eastern Province police commanding officer, Robertson Mweemba said Nyirenda was found unresponsive in his bed despite his dormitory mates’ efforts to wake him up at 06:00 hours yesterday.

Mweemba stated that upon realising this, a 15-year-old pupil who shared the same dormitory as Nyirenda attempted reported the situation to Elias Phiri, the 18-year-old male head boy of the school, who similarly could not wake Nyirenda up.

The situation was promptly escalated to the teacher on duty, Maureen Zulu of the said school who conducted an initial inspection and confirmed that Nyirenda was indeed dead.

Zulu wasted no time in reaching out to Charity Kanse, the deputy headteacher of the school who then reported the matter to Lumezi Police Station.

Mweemba revealed that police officers acted swiftly upon receiving the report by visiting the scene and did a physical inspection which failed to uncover any visible injuries or suspicious marks on Nyirenda’s body.

“The body of Nyirenda was since deposited into Lumezi district hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem examination,” Mweemba said.

An inquiry file has been opened.
