Kaweche to be buried today next to his mother

THE late son of Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda, Kaweche, is expected to be laid to rest next to his mother Betty Kaunda at the State Lodge area, where the family has been holding funeral gatherings ahead of burial.

Kaweche, 67, died in Ndola in the early hours of Thursday while on a business trip.

He died at a lodge where he had been staying.

Speaking to Kalemba this morning, former special assistant to late President Kenneth Kaunda George Zulu, said the body of Kaweche will be transported to Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross for a mass before taken back to rest in State Lodge area later today.

“At 10 hours, the remains will be taken to Cathedral of the Holy Cross for a mass and back to State Lodge for burial,” Zulu told Kalemba.

Kaweche was the fifth child of Dr Kenneth Kaunda and was five years old when his father became Zambia’s first President in 1964.

He was also known for taking care of the late former President during his final days and was part of the legal battle over Dr Kaunda’s burial place, a case he later lost.

Following his death, government and family members received his body at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport after it was repatriated from Ndola, with a Zambian Air Force aircraft.

President Hakainde Hichilema also extended his condolences to the Kaunda family, describing the death as a sad moment for the nation.
