According to the Copperbelt’s finest law enforcers, the shootout happened at exactly 07:05 hours yesterday, after the gang, pretending to lead police to a buried AK-47 rifle, decided to play Rambo in the bush but forgot they were not the only ones holding guns.
Among those promoted to permanent silence included some serious CV holders in crime; Abel Banda, 39, a former soldier who once swore to protect and defend the country but somehow ended up on the wrong side of the law.
Also caught up in the heavenly relocation was Davies Chilemu, a 53-year-old security guard at Eggmania Farm, who also happened to mastermind the farm’s own robbery attempt on June 16.
Copperbelt Police commanding officer Pathius Siandege says the man had already served 18 years out of a 30-year sentence for murder and aggravated robbery before being released in 2019, clearly with no intention of retiring.
The gang of ten, two of whom are still on the run, were behind the failed June 16 robbery at Eggmania Farm, where the farm director Zafeiros Loupas, a Greek national, was shot in the stomach while defending his chickens and investment.
The crooks, armed with an AK-47 and a silver Toyota Belta, were outsmarted when the farmer bashed their getaway car using a Ford Ranger.
After investigations and a few tight slaps of police questioning, Chilemu, the egg-farm betrayer led officers straight to the rest of his unholy disciples.
But what was supposed to be a simple show us the gun walk-through in the bush turned into a last supper for the gang after one suspect tried to grab the hidden AK-47 while others went for officers’ weapons.
That’s when officers responded by unleashing a hail of bullets that instantly ended the gang’s earthly missions.
Recovered from the bush was the infamous AK-47 with its serial number erased and 15 rounds of live ammunition.
“The bodies of the deceased Suspects have been deposited in Kitwe Teaching hospital Mortuary awaiting identification by relatives as well as Post morterm. An lnquiry file has been Opened,” Siandege stated.
He said police are on the tail of the remaining two suspects.
The rest of the gang that checked into Kitwe Teaching Hospital mortuary without an appointment include; Chileshe Mwango, 36, from Mufulira’s Kankoyo Township, Mashati Kaleyo Chola, 42, of Mushili, Ndola, Kashiba Chalwe, 55, from Ndeke, Ndola, Costa Mofya a.k.a “Richard”, 38, of Zamtan, Kitwe, Albert Bwalya, 28, and Friday Nsakanya, 22, both of Zambia Compound in Chambeshi
