Elephant claims life of a drunken Lumezi man

AN intoxicated man from Lumezi district has lost his life after he was attacked by an elephant while on his way home from a drinking spree.

Moses Banda aged 45 of Chinunda Village is believed to have visited Mutimbasonjo trading area for a night of heavy drinking.

The incident occurred on Saturday between 21:00 hours and 22:00 hours.

As Banda stumbled home in an intoxicated state, he encountered an elephant that attacked him without hesitation and prompted him to start crying for help.

Roused by his urgent plea for help, Banda’s family members rushed to help him, racing to his side with hope of thwarting the elephant’s lethal attack but unfortunately, he was already crushed.

Confirming the tragic incident, Eastern Province police commanding officer, Robertson Mweemba said the matter was reported to wildlife authorities who swiftly rushed to the scene to investigate and respond to the situation.

Mweemba highlighted the joint efforts of the police and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks to address the elephant attack that had claimed the life of Banda.

He disclosed that Banda’s remains were retrieved from the incident scene and taken to Lumezi District Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial.
