Most Reverend Chama said Zambians should remain united as the nation mourns the passing of the former President.

Archbishop Chama, who is also president of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), emphasised that the period of mourning should not divide the country but instead bring people together.

He was speaking when he featured on a programme called Ishiwi Lyakwa Kachema on Radio Lutanda in Kasama.

“As we mourn, we must avoid using words that add salt to the wound.”

“Those who are grieving may say things that are painful or hurtful, but we must understand that people handle grief differently,” he said.

Drawing from the Bible, he referenced the story of Lazarus, where Martha initially blamed Jesus for her brother’s death.

“Despite Martha’s blame, Jesus still performed a miracle and raised Lazarus from the dead.”

“This should teach us not to be discouraged by negative remarks from those in mourning, but rather to continue offering comfort and support,” Archbishop Chama said.

He acknowledged that various statements have emerged from the public, the late president’s family, the Patriotic Front (PF), and the government; however, he stressed that this should not distract the nation from its collective responsibility to lay the former Head of State to rest with the utmost respect and dignity.

“This is a time for the country to come together. If we allow ourselves to be divided by careless words or dishonest actions, we risk missing the blessing of unity that can come through this national funeral,” he said.

The Archbishop has since urged all Zambians to act with integrity, compassion, and unity during this solemn time.
