ANOTHER major dramatic event that took place in the land of work and joy was the appearing of a drunk looking permanent secretary on national television who was later dismissed by President Hakainde Hichilema.

President Hichilema fired then Ministry of Education PS for Technical Services Joel Kamoko, just days after the PS’s viral television appearance.

State House communication specialist Clayson Hamasaka confirmed the termination in a statement on February 11, citing Article 270 of the Constitution.

While no explicit reason was given for Kamoko’s dismissal, the move followed widespread attention and public criticism of his performance on TV.

In the footage that quickly made rounds on social media, Kamoko appeared visibly intoxicated, slurring his speech, struggling to articulate key education policies and displaying a sluggish demeanor that raised eyebrows among viewers.

As Zambian social media usually thrives on gossip, netizens quickly started speculating that alcohol may have been involved and memes were made.

The incident sparked criticism not only from the public but also from civil society organisations and education stakeholders, all of whom demanded accountability from a senior official entrusted with national responsibilities.

The former PS was later replaced by the current holder of the position Dr Kelvin Mambwe.
