THE Coalition of African Parliamentarians on Human Rights and Animal Health (CAPAH) is taking a significant stride towards strengthening Zambia’s food security.

They have secured 100 hectares of land in Kambopo for cultivating winter maize, aiming to reduce reliance on imported staples.

This initiative aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for investment in irrigation farming.

By utilising the Kambopo River’s resources, CAPAH hopes to achieve sustainable crop production while mitigating climate change effects.

“This is an Initiative to mitigate climate change effects. We all know that irrigation comes with a cost but it will mitigate the cost of having to import maize.”

“Therefore we as CAPAH have emerged to try and campaign for our citizens to continue on this directive by the President to go into climate resilient activities such as irrigation,” stated CAPAH’s resource mobilisation chairperson, Garry Nkombo.

The K700,000 project signifies CAPAH’s commitment to Zambia’s agricultural development and food security.

The project’s success has the potential to serve as a model for large-scale irrigation initiatives across the country.
