THE Zambian government has announced the construction of a new airport in Chinsali, Muchinga Province.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Frank Tayali said while featuring on Delight Radio yesterday that the construction will begin in July 2024 and is expected to be completed within three years.
The project aims to improve Zambia’s infrastructure and promote economic growth in the region.
According to Tayali, the Zambia National Service (ZNS) will undertake the construction of the robust airport project.
Tayali stressed the government’s unwavering commitment to the realisation of the project adding that the development of transport infrastructure is vital for sustained growth and social- economic transformation.
“For us to achieve a diversified and resilient economy, we have to build a well functional transport system here in Muchinga Province and this means the province’s status will be improved,” Tayali said.
In a separate development, the government also revealed the expansion of Mansa Airport’s runway in Luapula Province.
Ministry of Information and Media director spokesperson Henry Kapata said the 1.7 km to 3 km extension will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft like the Boeing 777.
The project includes the construction of a new fire station and a perimeter fence to enhance safety.
“Additionally, the new runway will be strategically positioned further away from buildings, reducing the risk of structural damages in case of accidents,” added Kapata.
