A DARING escape unfolded at Chama Police Station in Eastern Province over the weekend, leaving authorities scrambling to recapture a fugitive.

Maxwell Lombe, already serving a 3-year sentence for burglary and theft, saw an opportunity for freedom when a police officer opened the cell door to admit another suspect.

In a flash, Lombe, along with fellow convict George Nyirenda (serving a five-year term), lunged at the officer and pushed their way out of the cell, disappearing into the night like a bat in the sky.

The officer, caught off guard by the sudden surge, could only watch as Lombe and Nyirenda vanished like phantoms.

Thankfully, the commotion alerted other officers who sprang into action.

A chase ensued, and while Nyirenda was apprehended relatively quickly, Lombe managed to melt back into the throngs of Chama, a fugitive once more.

Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer, Paul Achiume, confirmed the incident and assured the public that a manhunt for Lombe is underway.

“The two convicts pushed the door when the police officer opened it, which caused both of them to escape,” he said

Officers are determined to ensure he doesn’t enjoy his newfound freedom for long.
