AS Nurses Day approaches this month, the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) is gearing up for a week-long celebration dedicated to honouring the invaluable contributions of nurses in healthcare, inspired by the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern day nursing.

UTH Head of Nursing Services Petronella Mundia said Nurses Day is significant as it marks the recognition of Nightingale’s birth on May 12, 1820, and her remarkable service in caring for soldiers during war times.

This week serves as an opportunity to highlight the multifaceted roles of nurses in society and UTH extends an invitation to the public to participate in various activities showcasing nursing services.

Mundia encouraged the public to visit UTH throughout the week to witness firsthand, the diverse range of services offered, including eye screening and other health-related services.

Among the key services provided by nurses are diabetes testing, high blood pressure check-ups, cancer screening, eye tests, HIV testing, COVID screening, and vaccinations, reflecting the comprehensive care provided by nursing professionals.

Mundia said the hospital aims to educate the public about the operations of different health departments, fostering a deeper understanding of healthcare processes and promoting health awareness.

“So there are various activities displayed here, we urge the public to come through because this will run from today Monday up to Friday,” said Mundia.

“People should come and see what nurses do and the services being offered. Here you can do eye screening and so many other things.”

This year’s Nurses Day will be celebrated under the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care.”
