A rescue train dispatched to assist an earlier derailment, collided with the very passenger coach it was sent to recover, leading to one death and 30 injuries.

The unfortunate sequence of events began around 16:00 hours at kilometre 1513, between Mununga and Kalonje on Wednesday.

According to TAZARA authority, the Mukuba passenger train No. M22 had already suffered a derailment.

In response, TAZARA dispatched Rescue Train No. 611. However, instead of a successful recovery, the rescue train itself became involved in a collision with the disabled passenger coach.

A TAZARA employee, Davy Siwale lost his life in the accident.

Additionally, 30 individuals, including 10 TAZARA employees and 19 passengers, sustained injuries.

All the injured were taken to Mpumba Rural Health Centre for treatment and have since been discharged.

Zambia’s Regional General Manager Kambani Ndhlovu and other TAZARA management visited the injured, offering support to the victims and their families during this difficult time.

A comprehensive investigation is now underway to determine the exact cause of this unexpected turn of events.
