…Making Your Life Count with Dr Humphrey Mutiti

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12 NIV

Previous studies suggest that people who engage in helping others are happier and have better mental and physical health. Doing good for others will come back to you in unexpected ways.

Whatever you do to others will come back to you pressed down, shaken together and running over. Doing good to others is not a duty but a source of joy and happiness.

We should look for opportunities to do good to others. We should aim to do what we would want them do for us. Those who are strong and blessed help others, even if they are struggling with their problems. William Danforth said once said, “Our most valuable possessions are those which can be shared without lessening; those which when shared multiply. Our least valuable possessions are those which when divided are diminished.”

Somebody saw something in you and reached out to help you become what you are today. That act of kindness determined where you are today. The person may have been your pastor, a parent, a friend, a teacher, a coach, a neighbour, or just someone who gave you extra money, prayers, good advice, or the right equipment and supplies. That individual had the foresight and the resources to invest in you and to take a risk on your future.

I challenge you this day to take a few minutes this week and send a note to people who have greatly affected your life. Also, take a few minutes to help someone else get ahead. You will find this to be one of the most satisfying experiences you’ve had in a long time. Doing this will decrease your stress, increase your life-expectancy, make you feel better, make you happier at work, promote your mental health, give you happiness and it will even motivate you to do good again.

A verse in Proverbs is one of my favourite verses. It says, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so” (3:27 NKJV). You have something in your possession that can bless someone. Maybe it’s a timely word, a much-needed piece of advice, a monetary gift to meet a need, or a simple thank you for a job well done.

In closing, choosing God’s will in our own lives makes those around us better. Invest in somebody today. Believe in that person. Offer support and encouragement. Help that person rise to another level.

Try it; you’ll love it! You’ll also benefit from it! And that good thing you’ve given to others might just come flying back to you too. Steve Maraboli once said, “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. Reach out to someone today. Invest into someone today and after many days you will find it.
