Zambia remains one of Africa’s most peaceful nations – Simuuwe

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) has noted that Zambia remains one of Africa’s most peaceful nations, dismissing claims that Zambia risks political instability.

Party Media Director Mark Simuuwe described such claims as misleading and unfair, saying they do not reflect the reality of a country that continues to uphold democracy, stability and order under the UPND’s leadership.

Simuuwe was responding to remarks attributed to former secretary to the cabinet Dr Leslie Mbula, which have been noticed to imply that Zambia could face unrest, similar to that seen in Tanzania during current electoral unrest.

According to Simuuwe, public figures and commentators must exercise integrity and patriotism when speaking on national issues, emphasising that misleading statements only serve to divide the country and erode public confidence.

“Zambia is a beacon of peace and democracy in the region and people are free to speak, to associate, and to engage in national development without fear. That is something we must protect, not distort,” said Simuuwe.

He added that government is focused on delivering inclusive growth and tangible results through development programmes like the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Simuuwe said the initiative reflects government’s commitment to uplifting communities and ensuring equal access to basic services.

“Our peace is our greatest strength. We should never allow misinformation to distract us from the progress we are making as a nation,” he said.

Simuuwe further noted that government has shown exceptional openness in consulting various sectors on key governance issues such as constitutional reforms, decentralisation and social development.

He also said the government values feedback but urged that it should be based on honesty, national interest, and fairness rather than anger or hidden motives.
