At a colourful gala hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts last night, FAZ stole the spotlight by scooping five top honours, with the federation itself being crowned Federation of the Year.
The reigning CAF Women’s Footballer of the Year and Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda, danced away with the Sportswoman of the Year award adding another feather to her already packed cap.
Behind her, rising star Mercy Chipasula was named Young Female Sportswoman of the Year, reminding the nation that the future of Zambian football is already knocking loudly on the global stage.
Meanwhile, Coach of the Year honours crossed borders and found their way to Namibia where Carol Kanyemba is currently busy drilling the Under-17 girls at the COSAFA tournament.
Carol earned the honour for masterminding Zambia’s qualification to the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic and winning the COSAFA title.
Fittingly, her team, the Zambia U-17 Women’s National Team, affectionately known as the Copper Princesses, was named Team of the Year, making it a royal flush for Zambian football.
Speaking after the awards, Mweemba paid glowing tribute to Kamanga and his past executive for the structural work they put in to elevate Zambian football.
“As President of the Football Association of Zambia, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr Andrew Ndanga Kamanga and his executive for laying the foundation for these achievements. Their hard work and dedication have paved the way for this success,” said Mweemba.
