In the two minute track, titled ECL tribute, thank you for everything, the rapper whose real name is Mulaza Kaira reflects on moments shared with Lungu, remembering him not just as a political figure but as a man he once jogged with, campaigned for through sponsored songs and respected deeply.
The song has struck a powerful chord with fans across the country, many of whom have shared the video widely on social media, calling it a “fitting goodbye” and a “heartfelt expression of loss.”
The retired but active musician opens the song by painting a portrait of a man who was always sharply dressed, soft spoken, but tough minded.
“Akamukamba muli suit ya blue, slim feet… insalu shena lyonse kalishibe very neat,” he raps in Bemba, meaning, “He was the guy in the blue slim fit suit, his clothes were always neat.”
Macky 2 was one of the artistes who openly supported Lungu during his presidency through paid for campaign songs.
He was part of the hit song “Alebwelelapo” which had the likes of Mampi and Yo Maps done during the 2021 elections, an experience he now remembers with a mix of pride and sadness.
“Nalilepo jogging nakena… awe kali fit,” he says. “I once went jogging with him, he was really fit.”
In one of the lines, he sings, “The endless joy whenever we met… I wish life ngatwalebika pa repeat,” which translates as “I wish we could put life on repeat.”
The song also touches on the turbulence following Lungu’s death, particularly the disagreements between his family and the government over funeral arrangements.
Macky 2 expresses his sadness that political tension has clouded a time that should be marked by dignity and unity.
“It’s really sad that kuli ifyakulandalanda… instead of letting you sleep in your tomb,” he says, lamenting that the focus has shifted from mourning to disputes.
He also references the recent death of fellow musician Dandy Krazy, adding that 2025 has been a particularly difficult year for Zambia’s creative and political communities.
I told myself I will not cry… but chikonko chagwila imwe no lie (I told myself I wouldn’t cry, but this grief is real, feeling like I have a lump on my throat),” he sings.
Lungu, who died on June 5, 2025 was widely admired for his calm demeanour, fashionable style and close ties with ordinary Zambians.
His slim fit suits and humour became part of his public persona.
Macky 2’s tribute, though short, has been praised for capturing the essence of the former president’s legacy. He ends the song with a simple, heartfelt goodbye.
“You ran your race and you ran it right. Wende bwino, wekafyashi. All I can say is thank you.”
