Church engaging politicians to create peace during nation’s mourning – Bishop Masupa

INDEPENDENT Churches of Zambia (ICOZ) president,  David Masupa has emphasised the vital role of the church in promoting peace and unity during this time of national mourning, as the country grapples with political tensions amidst the recent passing of former president Edgar Lungu.

Bishop Masupa revealed that the church has undertaken a proactive effort to communicate with various political parties throughout the country, including those that were closely associated with Lungu, in a bid to establish dialogue and cultivate harmony amidst the national mourning period.

Bishop Masupa told #Kalemba in an interview that the church is working to ensure that all can move forward as a united country, honouring the memory of late former president Lungu and working towards a brighter future.

“We recognise that these are challenging times for our country but we must remain steadfast in our commitment to promote unity, understanding, and peace. This is the only way we can honour President Lungu’s memory and work toward a brighter future for all Zambians,” he said.

He issued a strong caution against the use of the tragic loss of President Lungu as a catalyst for propagating division and hate speech, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and unity within the country during this sensitive period.

“It is imperative that we refrain from exploiting this tragic moment for political gains or fueling hatred against one another because such actions only sow discord and undermine our efforts to come together as a nation during this difficult time,” Bishop Masupa warned.

He appealed to Zambians to reject violence and embrace love and understanding.

Bishop Masupa said by embracing peace, compassion and unity, it is the most fitting way to honour the memory of the former president and it is the role everyone must play during this time of mourning.
