Zambia’s US$100 million Great TDP faces challenges despite early progress, Tourism PS reveals

TOURISM permanent secretary Evans Muhanga has expressed concerns that while the US$100 million Green, Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (Great TDP) is significant, it is not enough to fully unlock Zambia’s vast tourism potential.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement with the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Water Development and Tourism yesterday, Muhanga said the project, which began last year and will run until December 2030, has made notable progress in improving Zambia’s tourist sector.

However, the amount is not enough to carry out most of the activities needed to ease access to tourism destinations.

“The US$100 million is not enough to unlock all the tourism development areas in a country as huge as Zambia with so much natural potential,” Muhanga said.

Backed by the World Bank, the Great-TDP project has financed the construction of roads, bridges and information centres, among other developments.

However, the Tourism PS warned that several challenges continue to affect the project’s progress.

Poor road conditions, particularly in areas such as the route from Mporokoso to Nsama have limited access to key tourist destinations.

Additionally, proposed mining activities in protected areas pose a risk to wildlife, water bodies and local livelihoods.

“There is a lot to do beyond the US$100 million. Some projects require far more resources than what we currently have,” Muhanga said.
