Muyangwa salutes Hichilema, police over quick action against Kalumbila mob

A Lusaka-based businessman has showered praises on President Hakainde Hichilema and the Zambia Police Service for the quick and decisive action taken in the aftermath of a mob that attacked and killed a woman in Kalumbila last Friday.

Dillon Muyangwa observed that if left unchecked, the rumours of vanishing manhoods and mobs attacking those accused have potential to degenerate the country into mass murders like was witnessed back in 2020 during the gassing period.

A fortnight ago, a 61-year old man was attacked in Chingola after some men claimed their reproductive organs had vanished after he tapped their shoulders.

However, the claim was proved false after physical and medical examinations which led to the arrest of the claimants.

A few days later, Eneless Hellen Kamutumbe who was on a business trip in Kalumbila was attacked and killed by a mob after Prince Ntambo, a 25-year old man falsely claimed she had stolen his manhood.

Eneless’ killing has been widely condemned with President Hichilema ordering the arrest of all those involved in the gruesome murder.

Since then, close to 300, people have been arrested on possible charges of murder, assault, distraction of public property as well as riotous behavior.

The Zambia Police Service has increased it’s presence in Kalumbila and warned that it will not tolerate any mob activities.

Thirteen men from the Copperbelt have since been arrested for falsely claiming their manhoods had vanished.

Reacting to the developments, Muyangwa noted that President Hichilema acted quickly and provided leadership which may have been missing during the gassing period.

“By coming out to publicly speak against the mob killing and order for the arrest of all those involved, President Hakainde Hichilema provided the critical leadership and direction to halt the barbaric behavior of attacking innocent people based on false rumours of lost reproductive organs,” Muyangwa noted.

“If you remember in 2020, we lost a lot of our brothers and sisters to violent mobs over gassing suspicions because we may have lacked leadership,” he added.

Muyangwa praised the Zambia Police Service saying they were doing a “great job” but urged them to investigate the matter diligently without implicating innocent people.

He also urged citizens not be moved into action without verifying matters saying people risked landing themselves in jail.

“As you may have heard of noticed, the country’s economy is on an impressive mend, and for us fo maintain that for the good of all citizens, we need need peace and avoid activities that disrupt trade and business. The kind of violence like what happened in Kalumbila is not good for the economy,” added Muyangana.
