THE usually quiet trails of Motoka Village in Mansa turned into a theatre of violence on Wednesday night when a routine motorbike ride ended with a suspected robber dead and the rider himself locked up by police.
The drama began around 21:00 hours last Wednesday when Boneface Kafwimbi, a 25-year-old motorbike rider of Nona Village, was approached by two men who requested a ride to Motoka, near Mansa Secondary School.
Trusting them as ordinary customers, Kafwimbi mounted his red unregistered motorbike and the trio set off into the darkness.
But halfway into the trip, the men revealed their true colours with sudden violence, turning against the rider, shoved him aside and snatched the motorbike.
As the two strangers disappeared into the night with the bike, Kafwimbi broke into a chase, determined not to lose the machine entrusted to him by Osward Kunene of Ndola.
In a scene fit for an action film, the rider managed to corner one of the fleeing suspects where they exchanged fists.
In the heat of the scuffle, Kafwimbi’s hand fell on a stone and heavily struck the suspect’s head who collapsed to the ground and died instantly.
His accomplice, was nowhere to be seen as he sped away into the shadows, never to look back.
Stunned by the bloody outcome, Kafwimbi made his way to Senama Police Post to report the incident.
But instead of walking away as a victim of crime, he was booked as a suspect.
Luapula Province police commanding officer Mwala Yuyi confirmed the incident.
“The complainant has since been detained for murder,” stated Yuyi.
