The cyclist, Musonda Changwe, was killed yesterday evening after being struck by a speeding Toyota Probox along the Chipata-Lundazi Road.
The accident occurred at approximately 18:20 hours.
Eastern province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba identified the driver of the Toyota Probox registration number ARC 7256 as 22-year-old Emmanuel Nkata, a resident of Chiswanyanga Village in Lumezi District.
According to Mweemba, both Changwe, who was cycling from Lumezi to Chingwengwe village, and Nkata were traveling in the same direction, from north to south.
The accident happened when Nkata reportedly lost control of his vehicle due to excessive speed, causing it to veer off the road to the left and collide with Changwe.
Nkata sustained a cut on his right hand, bruises on his back, and a cut on the right side of his neck.
He is currently receiving treatment at Lumezi Mission Hospital.
The body of the deceased, Musonda Changwe, has been deposited in the Lumezi Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.
