According to the ministry’s principal public relations officer Mwaka Ndawa, following the abrupt notice, the affected workers sought help from the ministry to ensure they received their benefits.

Ndawa said the ministry guided the company to follow the law and protect the workers’ rights in line with the Employment Code Act.

She revealed that the company was forced to pay a total of K163,639 in redundancy benefits to the affected workers.

She said the payments covered money in place of notice, December salaries, gratuity and pay for unused leave days, ensuring that no worker was disadvantaged by the short notice.

“The Ministry would like to urge employers to engage the office of the Labour Commissioner on time, when contemplating operational changes, in order to ensure lawful processes are followed,” she stated in a statement.
