The fatal accident occurred on Saturday last week when the truck driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle while descending into the pit.

The vehicle hit a hole, leading to a fire that engulfed the truck and claimed the driver’s life.

In a statement, Ministry of Labour and Social Security principal public relations officer Mwaka Ndawa confirmed the incident and expressed the Ministry’s sorrow over the loss of life.

The Ministry extended condolences to the bereaved family, the mining company and fellow workers.

“Mining is the most vital pillar of the nation’s economy, but it is also one of the most hazardous workplaces,” the Ministry stated.

“The loss of a single life during the course of duty is one too many.”

The Ministry said it will work closely with the mine safety department and other stakeholders to determine the cause and identify any safety lapses that may have contributed to the incident.

“This fateful incident is a harrowing reminder of the critical importance of occupational safety and health at work,” said Ndawa.

“We reiterate our commitment to ending mine accidents by ensuring the highest standards of occupational safety and health are observed across Zambia’s mining sector.”
