President Hichilema’s decision is a testament to the significant impact Sejani had on the nation’s development during his tenure as Minister of Local Government from 1991 to 2001.

Sejani was an accomplished politician who represented the Mapatizya constituency as member of parliament for an impressive twenty years, from 1992 to 2011.

He also served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries from 1997 to 1999 under the late President, Fredrick Chiluba’s administration.

Sejani remained dedicated to serving his country throughout his career, and at the time of his passing, he held the esteemed position of Chairperson of the Local Government Service Commission.

On Monday July 28, 2025, a wave of shock and sorrow swept across Zambia as the nation mourned the unexpected loss of Sejani, a dedicated public servant who died at the age of 67.

His passing occurred at Netcare Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he had been receiving medical treatment for an undisclosed illness.

However, President Hichilema has accorded him an official funeral, which serves as a tribute to Sejani’s legacy of dedication and public service.

Government through the Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa confirmed that Sejani’s mortal remains will arrive in the country today around 12:30 hours, at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airpot in Lusaka, aboard a Zambian Airways Flight.

In a statement, Kangwa informed the public that the cabinet office would be releasing a detailed schedule of the official funeral in due course, providing further information on the planned events and arrangements.
