Flashback 2025: 5-year-old Annie’s smile returns as wheelchair brings freedom

ONE of the most touching stories Kalemba covered in 2025 was that of five-year-old Annie Ngulube, a young girl who had never walked a day in her life due to a rare condition called Arthrogryposis.

In June, Kalemba reported how Annie spent her days stuck in one spot while other children her age played freely, a reality that left her mother heartbroken.

Weeks after the story was published, help arrived in the most unexpected and heartwarming way.

Lusaka-based humanitarian Sanjeev Sharda brought a wheelchair to Kalemba’s offices of which the Kalemba team received and sent it via a courier to Annie’s home in Kitwe on a Thursday, a gift that instantly brought a smile to her face and a sense of mobility she had never experienced in her five years.

“It was hard moving her even from one place to another but this gift will ease her movements and make a big difference. We are truly grateful,” Annie’s mother told Kalemba, her voice filled with emotion.

The delivery of the wheelchair not only eased Annie’s daily struggles but also restored hope and joy to her family, making it one of the most memorable and uplifting impact stories Kalemba published in 2025.
