The deceased has been identified as Reuben Mpundu, whose lifeless body was discovered floating near Katambo Island after being reported missing for several days.
According to police, Mpundu was last seen on July 3 around 16:00 hours at Namanzuma Market where he was buying groceries and alcohol before heading to the harbour.
He then boarded his canoe and paddled towards Katambo Island where he had camped for fishing.
However, later that evening, another fisherman identified only as Chilonge of Kabbalwe Island arrived at Katambo Island and found Mpundu’s canoe anchored at the shore.
Inside the canoe were his light blue cap, black trousers, and a paddling stick but the fisherman was nowhere to be seen.
Sensing danger, Chilonge quickly alerted fellow fishermen and informed village headman Kelvin Mango, who later made sure the matter was reported to the Police.
Southern Province deputy commanding officer Moono Namalongo confirmed the incident, saying the matter was reported by Miriam Chilufya, aged 52, of Namanzuma village.
Efforts to locate Mpundu took several days until July 9 around 06:30 hours when the man identified as Patson Shota of Namanzuma Village spotted a body floating a few metres away from where the canoe had been found.
Police retrieved the decomposing body from the lake and confirmed that it was that of Mpundu.
Police say no foul play is suspected in the matter and have since opened an inquiry file.
“The family has been advised to proceed with burial and to mark the grave accordingly,” stated Namalongo.
