Cloudy skies, drop in temperature expected across Zambia, warns Met Department

THERE will be cloudy skies, cooler temperatures and occasional drizzles over the next two days, the Zambia Meteorological Department has warned.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Department revealed that a strong high pressure system over the southeast coast of South Africa is driving a cool and moist airflow into much of Zambia from today to Wednesday.

The department warned that this weather system is expected to cause a noticeable drop in temperatures and increased wind speeds across several regions.

The affected areas include Eastern, Muchinga, Northern, Luapula, Copperbelt, Central, Lusaka, and Southern provinces, where significant cloud cover will dominate the skies.

Light rainfall or drizzles are also anticipated in selected parts of Central, Lusaka, Muchinga, and Eastern provinces during this period.

The cloud cover is also likely to affect solar energy output, with the Department advising users of solar power systems to manage stored energy efficiently until conditions improve.

The Department urged the public to keep warm to guard against cold related illnesses, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

The advisory also cautioned against water based transport activities, citing increased wind activity that could pose safety risks on lakes and rivers.

With dusty conditions expected in some regions, residents have been advised to avoid open areas to reduce the risk of respiratory infections, including flu.

“The Zambia Meteorological Department, under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, will keep monitoring weather patterns and sharing timely updates with the public, alongside the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU),” read the statement.
