ONE person has died while four others sustained injuries in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred early this morning along the Great East Road at UNO Filling Station in Chongwe.
The accident happened at around 02:00 hours and involved a Volvo truck, registration number ABX 4403, loaded with charcoal and a GWM van, registration number ABL 289.
The truck driven by Tebson Mujulu, who vanished in thin air and his whereabouts still remain unknown, reportedly attempted to overtake improperly and collided with the van which was turning right.
According to Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the driver of the van, 31-year-old Gilbert Mudenda of Waterfalls was trapped inside the vehicle and later rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Among the passengers on board include 32-year-old Bright Mweetwa, 27-year-old Lewis Siakalampisia, 25-year-old Luckson Sialenga, and 30-year-old Francis Sakala who sustained various injuries.
All of them were rushed to Chongwe District Hospital for treatment.
“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to those injured. We also urge drivers to exercise maximum caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations,” Hamoonga confirmed the incident in a statement.
A price list pillar belonging to UNO Filling Station was also damaged in the crash.
Police have appealed to road users to observe traffic rules and avoid dangerous maneuvers to prevent further loss of life and property.
