A 63-year-old woman in Chama District is nursing serious injuries and wounds after being attacked by elephants as she was coming back from collecting grass in the bush.
The victim has been identified as Grace Kaluba of Chola village in Chief Tembwe’s area.
The victim, who was in the company of three other women, was attacked by the elephants around 10:00 this morning.
Ruth Banda, who was among the four women, says they just heard Grace Kaluba, who was a bit ahead of the others, shouting “elephants” as the elephants drew closer to her.
Banda said one elephant charged at her, and other elephants started coming to the spot as Kaluba shouted for help.
The victim and the other women started shouting for help, and other people came through and found her surrounded by elephants.
Banda said a man identified as Lameck Kachali is the one who came and picked the victim up and put her on his back after the elephants had left the spot due to the noise from people.
She added that after some time, Mabinga Ward Councilor Lameck Zimba who also came through got the victim from Lameck Kachali and rushed her to Tembwe Rural Health Center.
Tembwe Rural Health Center in-charge Emmanuel Mwaanga said the victim was quickly attended to.
Mwaanga said the victim experienced a fractured left leg and a swollen face, and complained of back pains as well.
He added that the victim is expected to be taken to Chama District Hospital for specialist treatment, and that the health center has already made communication with the district hospital.
Mabinga Ward Councilor Lameck Zimba who was at the bedside of the victim, confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, the police are yet to release a report on the incident.
