Their vigilance paid off, as the Zambia Police Service recorded a 19 percent drop in criminal activities during the event, compared to the previous year.

During the 2024 show, 80 cases of various offenses were reported, but this year, the number dropped to 65, marking a significant decrease in criminal activity.

According to police assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, of the 65 total reported incidents, 53 cases involved theft from individuals attending the event while an additional 9 cases involved General theft from vendors and exhibitors.

In addition to the numerous incidents of theft, there was one reported case of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (OABH), a report of malicious damage to property, and indecent assault on a female.

Furthermore, the police handled a total of 19 contravention offenses related to conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, which included public disturbances, disorderly behaviour, and other actions that threatened the safety or well-being of event attendees.

Chilabi disclosed that majority of offenders were released with warnings, with a number of them also choosing to pay admission of guilt fines as an alternative to pursuing legal proceedings.

In terms of financial losses, Chilabi noted that the total value of property stolen during the show amounted to K343,990, of which K16,105 has been recovered thus far.

“Nine individuals were arrested in connection with the reported criminal incidents at the Show. Investigations into these cases are ongoing, with the aim of apprehending any remaining perpetrators and bringing them to justice,” Chilabi said.

Chilabi further emphasised that there were no reported cases of motor vehicle theft, theft from motor vehicles, personation, or forgery during the event, indicating a decline in certain types of criminal activity compared to previous years.

“This improvement is attributed to increased police visibility, strategic deployment of officers throughout the Showgrounds, and enhanced cooperation from the public,” he added.

“The Zambia Police Service remains committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and visitors during national events.”
