ZAMBIA has been grappling with the tragic issue of maternal and neonatal deaths in recent years, casting a shadow over the joy of childbirth for many families.

President Hakainde Hichilema has voiced deep concern over these heartbreaking losses, emphasising that such deaths are unacceptable regardless of their causes.

In a speech delivered by Vice President Mutale Nalumango on his behalf at the maternal and perinatal summit in Lusaka yesterday, President Hichilema highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that the current maternal and neonatal mortality rates translate to a thousand deaths per year, a figure that is deemed unacceptable for the nation.

He stressed that these deaths not only affect the health of mothers but also pose a significant public health concern for the country.

President Hichilema also pointed out that there are other factors beyond healthcare that contribute to these tragic outcomes apart from deficiencies.

He urged healthcare providers to approach their work with compassion and dedication, especially when delivering babies in health facilities.

“The current maternal mortality ratio [and] the neonatal mortality rate translate into a thousand deaths per year. This is an acceptable for our country,” stated President Hichilema.

“While such deaths are often attributed to deficiency in the health sectors, there are a lot outside the heath sector that contribute to these negative outcomes.”

Health Minister Sylvia Masebo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing these pressing issues.

She assured the public that her ministry would work tirelessly to improve maternal and neonatal healthcare services, noting a decrease in the mortality rate over the past year.
