THE Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) has urged Government to employ qualified accountants in secondary schools.

In a statement to the media, ZICA president Yande Mwenye said enlisting qualified accountants in secondary schools would help curb the mismanagement of public funds.

Expressing concern over the latest auditor general’s report which revealed the misuse of K300,000 within the Ministry of Education, Mwenye described the findings as alarming.

“It is a bit surprising that K300,000 was misused under the Ministry of Education, as indicated in the latest auditor general’s report because most individuals handling finances in schools lack proper accounting qualifications.” stated Mwenye.

Mwenye emphasised that the absence of qualified accountants in schools contributes to the mismanagement and potential abuse of public funds thereby eroding the integrity of educational institutions.

“There is an urgent need for the government to recruit qualified accountants in schools to prevent the mismanagement of public funds,” reiterated Mwenye.
